Revisiting Digha a wonderful tourism place

Human being has an eye for natural beauty. Be it the lofty and snow-covered mountains or dense forests or raging waves smiting upon the seashores, we always enthralled by the charm of the nature. For the nature-loving people, Digha is a place worth visiting thousand times.

The place, situated in east Midnapore district of West Bengal, is one of the most fascinating and favorite sea beaches among the travelers. Being only 187Km. away from Kolkata, the place offers an affordable recreation for middle class families. Most probably it is one of the reasons that people of almost all economic classes, snowed under the pressure of crammed work schedules find Digha the most suitable place to get relived of stresses and reenergized.

If historical past is to be excavated, the place got its first mention in one of the letters written by Lord Warren Hastings to his wife. In this letter, Hastings alluded to the place as ‘Brighton of the East’. It is a little known fact that Digha was originally named as Beerkul. The charm of the place was so captivated an English tourist namely John Frank Smith that he decided living here. It was after independence, Digha was developed a beach resort under the patronage of then chief minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. He was greatly influenced by Mr. John and promoted Digha as a nice tourist spot and with the time the place has come to be known as the most renowned beach in West Bengal.

This place is a small town but is dotted with too many hotels. Most of them are lined up along the main road. As digha is always bustling with chattering and other activities of the travelers, so one should not expect the place to be calm and quiet. Still, being away from the hackneyed daily lives and enjoying the vast expanse of water in front of you will be enough to refresh your mood. You can witness the rage of the waves thrashing along the boulders and sprinkling the droplets of water around. You can also take pleasure in swimming but take care to dive into the water when it is low tide only.

The sea comes at its vibrant best at the time of sunrise and sunset. The sun going out of or diving into the sea splotching it with the red colors all over is a spectacular view worth framing into mind for good.

Apart from taking delight into swimming and watching the scenic beauty, travelers can set out for sight seeing too. They can drop a visit to new Digha, an extension of the old one. Shankarpur Fishing Harbor Project, only 14Km. away from Digha is also a beach resort drawing attention of the tourists. As the place is yet to earn the fame like Digha, so the virgin beach of Shankarpur offers a tranquil ambience for the visitors.

Another place that offers a gentle sea-view is Junput. The lines of caesarian trees add to the beauty of the place. A research department has been built-up here by the State Government Fisheries Department.

Tourists can also squeeze time to visit Chandaneshwar, Lankeshwari and Kapal Kundala Temple near Kontai.

So, the tourist buffs, pack your bag and baggage, visit to Digha, enjoy the mesmerizing beauty of the place and come with a refreshingly enthusiastic mood.
