Howrah Bridge –One of the world's wonderful Bridge


Hanging Bridge” also known as Howrah Bridge or Rabindra setu is an engineering masterpiece and is now counted amongst the busiest cantilever bridge in the Whole World. Taking upon a daily traffic of about 50,000 vehicles and uncountable pedestrians, Howrah bridge have made its position equal to London harbour Bridge. But the later can never dream of such a traffic that to increasing everyday.. The bridge is a mediator connecting Kolkata and Howrah,and beecoming the lifeline of the city.

The bridge was built in the early 1939 and opened to traffic in 1943.It is said that it consumed 26,500 tons of steel and constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 250 lakhs. No incidents of major casualty were said to be happened during the construction phase of the masterpiece .The Howrah Bridge, which is itself a masterpiece, is considered to be one of the wonders of the world and is of immense & rich heritage value.The Anchor arms are measured to be 325ft. and the Cantilever arms are 468 ft. long at both ends. While the middle suspended span is 564 ft. of which main towers are 280 ft. high above the monoliths and 76 ft. apart at the top Bridge deck width is 71 ft. with two footpaths of 15 ft. on each side either.:

The best way to enjoy its beauty is to view it from the middle of the river where photography is not allowed. The ferries, Boats running from the below and the Howrah Station a more convenient way to cross the river and gives a good view of the bridge. The busy Howrah Bridge connects the city to Kolkata's Burrabazar also. The second bridge - the Vidyasagar Setu connects south Howrah to the Kolkata Maidan. Is said to be next howrah bridge.

The Howrah Railway Station near the bridge is one of the largest in the world with rail connections to all major Indian cities and towns. Howrah Station also serves as an important terminus for the suburban railway services of the Eastern and the South Eastern Railway. Located on the west side of the Hooghly River, it is linked to Kolkata by the Howrah Bridge.
