In our Hindu custom Light signifies the goodness & happiness to our families. During this festival oil lamps (Diyas) are burned throughout the night.This is a five days festival; each of the five days in the festival of Diwali is marked with a significant 'puja' of a certain God or Goddess.
The five days celebration of Diwali begins with "Laxmi Pujan". "Laxmi Pujan" is the day to worship Laxmi, the goddess of wealth. Indian culture has never considered wealth to be corruptive . According to the Indian culture a rich person is recognized to be God's beloved child, & he is always rewarded for the good karmas or his good work done in past life or in this day to day life. It is also a very important festival for business community or a small trader as it marks the end of the financial year & beginning of the new year. Account books are kept in the pujas to be worshipped so that god or godess would always keep their blessings on the them in the way of helping them earn money. The first day is called DHANTERAS which falls on the thirteenth day of the month of Kartik. The word "Dhan" means “money” or “wealth”. It's a very special occassion for everybody as houses & offices are renovated and beautifully decoratedwith flowers & others.The main gate or entrace of houses or office premises are beautifully decorated with rangoli design in order to welcome godess of wealth & hapiness.
